Talk of Inspiration & The Trashcan Sinatras

trashcansinatras

Here is a sketch inspired by one of my favorite bands, The Trashcan Sinatras. I had the pleasure of catching them on a rare acoustic tour in Scottsdale, AZ recently. Since drawing people is not my forte, I took the liberty of repurposing the band into their appropriate reptilian characters for this piece. I first experienced these Scottish craftsmen back in the early nineties in a track titled, “Obscurity Knocks”. I had never heard anything like it before and not much else has come close to it since. I bought their first CD “Cake” and they quicky became one of …

Printing on Canvas: Sealing the Canvas (3)

sealingcanvas

Sorry the third part in this “printing on canvas” series took so long, but there were many trials and errors in finding the best coating application to protect the work. This is not to say I have found the perfect product, but merely information to help others in the sealing process of their canvas prints. First off, I always let my prints dry for 24 hours before applying any sealer. The two types of coatings I have tried is Eco Print Shield and Timeless. (Note: I always used the satin finish in these products since it seems the most appropriate …

Mulberry Gekkards

I recently repainted this piece using digital paint from an original color pencil drawing created in 2002 (see original below). The idea for it came from one of my favorite color pencil artist, Kristy Kutch, who paints extraordinary florals using color pencils. Whenever I would view her beautiful still life creations, I would always imagine little lizard creatures infiltrating the picture. This is where many of my early concepts began, by taking a still life image and placing the Gekkards within it. Many people often say this painting reminds them of an Anne Geddes photograph, and I would agree, …

Looking for the right way to say Thank You!

ThankU-Sign

While at an art show this past weekend, I encountered an array of remarks that reminded me why I’m grateful to do the work of an artist; a former school librarian said, “That my storybooks were always checked from their school library.”, a woman who just quit her job that day said, “Seeing my work gave her peace about her decision and inspired her to focus on her own business.”, a sixth grade teacher told me she reads my book every year to her class and they enjoy it very much, an adolescent boy opened his wallet to make a …

Triple Bunk

Triplebunk

You will see in my last three blog posts, each illustration contains three Gekkards. Fortunately, three is a popular number in art compositions since it is an odd number, but the meaning runs a little deeper in my life. I was born the third child in our family, at 3:07 am in the morning, on May 3. From there, the number 3, unequivocally, became my lucky number and you will find it appearing in many of my compositions. Original Sketch drawn back in late 2001. Final Art completed in August 2010.
